Atlanta chooses 60th mayor in history on Tuesday

City of Atlanta precincts in DeKalb and Fulton counties are open from 7 am to 8 pm.

The long campaign to elect Atlanta's 60th mayor in history ends Tuesday.

City of Atlanta precincts in DeKalb and Fulton counties are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. for voters to choose between Mary Norwood or Keisha Lance Bottoms as mayor.

Bottoms and Norwood finished first and second respectively, on Nov. 7 from a crowded field of candidates to force Tuesday’s runoff.

If Norwood wins, she will become Atlanta’s first white mayor of the 21st century, and the first white female to ever hold the office. If Bottoms wins, she will become Atlanta’s second female mayor, along with continuing a trend of black mayors in Atlanta beginning in 1973.

Both candidates scored a number of high-profile endorsements in the campaign’s final week.

On Sunday, U.S. Sens. Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Kamala Harris (D-CA) stumped for Bottoms, whose campaign has been linked to alleged city hall corruption.

Earlier in the week, Norwood was endorsed by former Atlanta mayor Shirley Franklin and third-place finisher Cathy Woolard.

Bottoms held a rally outside City Hall on Thursday, where several Atlanta city council members, state lawmakers and rappers T.I. and Killer Mike appeared on her behalf.
