Officer shoots, kills armed man at Buford gas station; investigation underway

When officers arrived, they confronted the suspect, identified as a white male, in front of a laundromat in a strip shopping center. They observed the firearm in the waistband of his pants.

BUFORD, Ga. - Investigations are underway after an officer shot an armed man at a Shell gas station in the Buford/Sugar Hill area.

The call came in shortly after 4:00 a.m. from an unknown person that a man was walking along Peachtree Industrial Boulevard towards State Route 20 (Nelson Brogan Boulevard) and was armed with a gun.

When officers arrived, they confronted the suspect, identified as Steven Hutchins, 27, of Buford, in front of a laundromat in a strip shopping center. They observed the firearm in the waistband of his pants.

Officers attempted to speak with Hutchins who then proceeded to take the weapon out of his waistband and raised it towards the officers.

An officer who was at the scene then discharged his weapon, hitting the suspect.

A SWAT medic was present during the incident and immediately rendered aid to Hutchins as they awaited Gwinnett County Fire to respond to the scene.

Hutchins later died.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been called to assist and Peachtree Industrial Blvd northbound was shut down as investigations on this incident continued.

A police statement, issued Monday afternoon, indicated Hutchins lived only a short distance from where he was shot. The statement also stated that police responded to Hutchins' residence earlier this week on a "suicide attempt" call, but that he refused treatment.
